There is an interesting history to the Cambodia casinos that reside just across the border from next door Thailand, where gambling hall gaming is banned. Eight gambling halls are situated in a relatively small location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime spot, a three to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest wagering centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The amazing income acquired from the casinos ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million, and there are a number of controls requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mostly Thai; although, financing sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 17:00, and although visas are for all intents and purposes required to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is true of many borders.
The first Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only 1 casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary barge casino, highlights one hundred and fifty slot machine games and 60 table games. The Naga river boat never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon opened. A total of 150 slot machines and five table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred one armed bandits and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and 66 of the common gaming tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, again a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-inclusive resort and hotel building that contains numerous comforts accompanying the gambling den, which offers ten thousand square feet of 130 one armed bandits and 88 gaming tables.
