There is a fascinating story to the Cambodia gambling dens that reside just across the border from neighboring Thailand, in which gambling hall betting is not permitted. Eight casinos are established in a generally small area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime spot, a 3 to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest betting locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The phenomenal income gained from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a few restrictions constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is required to be largely Thai; however, financial sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 1700, and although visas are apparently required to cross, there are ways around this, as is real of most border crossings.
The initial Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving just a single gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked ship casino, features one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and sixty gaming tables. The Naga gambling den is open all day and night with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of vingt-et-un, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly opened. There are one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred slot machines and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat banque (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and sixty six of the familiar gaming tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive vacation and hotel compound that contains many luxuries on top of the gambling den, which has ten thousand sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slots and 88 tables.
